A lot of blind people don't use profile pictures. If you see a profile without a picture, that doesn't mean it's a spammer.

If you want to check whether an account is genuine, the best method is to read their profile text and pinned posts.

@feditips I don’t mind the accounts with no pic - it’s the ones with neither profile nor posts that annoy me. They follow you, but with zero info I ain’t following them back. Seriously considering blocking them though. I mean, why are they hiding?

@feditips Can you elaborate a little on "pinned post" What are the purpose of pinning my own post?

@feditips @Happy727 Maybe I should put a blindness emoji on my display name? I had this over in Birdville.

90% of the world's problems could be solved if people would read.

@feditips this can be true but also some of us do use profile pics like we have photos we like saved with tags like ‘head shot of me with purple glasses wearing a pink jumper’ that way we can know that that is the photo we use for socials. #Blind like over on twitter vast majority of blind people have a pic.

@feditips Based on what we observe on our open instances, spammers always use a profile picture. That's one of the (minor) facts we use to distinguish them from decent users so that we can delete their accounts short term.

@feditips Can you do a post about #AltText and #CamelCase

I tried to earlier the mastordon iOS App defaults to all lower case for # tags so trying to spread the message to take the time to use camel case.

FYI camel case more #Accessible for #ScreenReaders

Alt Text - I haven’t worked out how to do it on the app yet!

@feditips *sticking my foot in it* yes, i do consider this, and have thought about it for years. i still don't understand why blind people don't use profile pictures.

it is less newbie, it makes it much easier for sighted to recognise them (instead of a default image in an ocean of default images), and of course you don't have to use a portrait of yourself.

just a coloured block would do for recognition

@feditips Is there a way we can find blind people to follow to learn about their perspectives?

@feditips I would have never considered this, thank you!

@feditips
I don't have any personal pictures. I think I have some PTS from the being a target during the trump/NRA/russian influencers years
I miss the somewhat innocent years of social media when it was mostly social
I am hoping for a turn around

@feditips That said, I would still recommend that blind people use some kind of profile picture, anything other than the default.

@feditips unsure about this. I choose to withhold photos for a valid reason.
