There have been controversial changes to sorting and visibility of servers on JoinMastodon's list (mstdn.games/@britt/10983205919).

Whatever you think about these changes, it is problematic that new users are relying on a single central list of servers. What happens if JoinMastodon goes bad?

I'm trying to create an independent alternative with @FediGarden at:

โžก๏ธ fedi.garden

Are there any others? (NOTE: They have to have safety and reliability requirements and be human-curated.)

@feditips @FediGarden I see that med-mastodon is not in the Medicine page (under servers listed by topic), maybe something to add?

Here you can find a list of all servers in the Fediverse:

fediverse.observer/list

Thank you for FediGarden! It was how I found an instance-home for my other account of tiny book reviews a few days ago, after quite a bit of unsuccessful searching elsewhere!

@feditips @FediGarden As much as I like and support your efforts, I don't see the problem. Haven't used that site for years. In fact, I prefer it to go down, because Fediverse.to and fediverse.observer and curated lists like yours and joinfediverse.wiki and fediverse.party are better and are all that we need.

@feditips @FediGarden I'd noticed a drop off of new users and wondered if there was an issue there.

The thing is, I'm trying to prioritise the a good experience for our users over growth for growth's sake. I often turn on validation to protect the server (and it's users) from a sudden influx causing a drop in responsiveness. I feel this is a completely valid position that shouldn't be "punished" as it were.

Would the situation improve if a federated list of instances was part of the mastodon server functionality? Server admins could provide a list of recommended / like minded / interesting servers to look at. Maybe sites like #JoinMastodon and #FediGarden could then use those lists to create server independent entry points.

@feditips @FediGarden I emailed JoinMastodon ten days ago for inclusion on their list. Still waiting.

I find the lack of information about how many people are on the instances and reliability a bit.. Idk. That was something I used when I picked an instance. I picked one which was somewhat big but not too big and was reliable. instances.social helped me in that regard a lot.
Yes, size of the user base within an instance doesn't reaaally matter but it kinda does, esp. in the beginning when you don't know anyone. Nothing worse than empty timelines because the instance is too small

@feditips @FediGarden I changed my profile on the bird site (only used weekly or so to encourage migration posts) to include Fedi.garden

Tagging a few server admins I know that hopefully can get their servers listed here :)

It would be helpful (to me, and maybe others) if the list could include the maximum number of characters for a post, as some servers have changed from the 500 default (such as neurodifferent.me which is 2000).

Norway is a country in Europe.
There are several Fediverse servers in Norway.
Norway is not listed in your list.
