There's a pretty massive compensation gap between the top 10% of Rails companies in the US ($200-500k) and the rest of the top half ($130-180k).

As an individual developer, I think you should consider whether or not you want to "reach" for these FAANG-like jobs. Many are remote/worldwide. It's not a bad gig if you can get it.
