Yanukovich never returned to Ukraine, he immediately fled to Rostov after getting kicked out of Donetsk by oligarch Akhmetov, and Kharkiv bosses like Kernes kicked him too. Who'd go fight for that? So those were not rebels, rather mercs like Gubarev and Girkin, came from Russia with weapons!
