Please don't use ! 🙏

This is what it says about itself:

"(Fedified) is *the* way to make sure that you're following the account managed by the same person you used to follow on Twitter."

It wants to be a central authority. This is dangerous, and opposite to what the stands for.

People become dependent on a central authority, then it gets bought out by billionaires.

You can already verify your account on here without using any centralised lists:

@feditips I have tried verifying my website four times now and can't seem to get it to work. I'm using Wix and have embedded the code on the home page as well as gone into the code to add the reference. Doesn't seem to stick with that platform.

@feditips
Great to see some succinct Fedi preservation tips. It's important to repeat the reason why it works: it's a principle.

@feditips there's nothing wrong with this service and it fills a real, albeit temporary, need. @DataDrivenMD derives mo financial or other benefit and has put in a lot of personal time to help ease #twittermigration for new people to the platform. You don't have to use it if you don't want to but please don't engage in #tech #elitism or assume a #gatekeeper role for yourself and denigrate it. There's absolutely no harm to the #fediverse or any user if people decide this works for them.

@feditips you got that from their solution for me to follow a friend I had on Twitter?

@feditips what do you think about keybase io? That's a great way to prove that your online identities are the same entity.

@feditips What's stopping some enterprising individual from making a little script that takes query args and outputs the proper verification <a/> tag based on that? It would probably be like 1-2 lines of PHP.

print "<a rel=\"me\" href=\"{$_GET['v']}\">VERIFIED</a>"

Set the field to something like lulverified.com/?v=user@domain and suddenly it turns green.

@feditips People seem so averse to the old internet way of doing things, where your standing in real life doesn't affect who you are online. People get too used to their own authority and feel uncomfortable without it. It's a thing which people would be wise to unlearn.

@feditips hey, is it possible to find my friends on Mastodon through email contact?

Maybe I'm a bit old for all this and out of touch but what the dickens is a fediverse and fedified?

@feditips so I think fedifed is a useful signal for the legitimacy of an account. Though it shouldn't bill itself as the one and only solution.

Given the skill at which some people set up phishing web sites that are indistinguishable from the legitimate site a sufficiently motivated attacker may still be able to impersonate someone who is using rel=me validation.

Also I think it has a time limit for its utility in its current form as the pool of people subject to impersonation attacks will change over the years and "validated by twitter befor elno" is frozen in time.

Over the long term it might help to have some identity verification services specializing in certain countries or communities being willing to attest to high value targets identities

Just because they say their a central authority doesn't mean anyone has to believe they're a central authority.

@feditips I don't see the harm. I also verify myself through my own blog. If people want assurance that I am the verified @palafo pre-Elon from Twitter, that's really all that list is offering. Not everyone has a blog or a site these days. If my employer figures out a way to verify me, I'll switch to that.

@feditips I'm gonna disagree with you -- I think you're reading a lot into that statement. If someone writes another way to do the same thing, it just won't be *the* way anymore. At the moment, it really does appear to be the way. I care more that its useful and works.

Jay “parody” 🆒

@feditips It also ineptly misconstrues what rel=“me” means in the first place

@feditips We need a simpler way to verify accounts, that is one. Some people don't have a website and besides putting a notice on twitter (for those who came from that thing) that they moved here I don't see any other better way to "get verified"

@feditips It’s something you use just once, when you first come to Mastodon, and then never use again. What’s the big deal?
