Hey new people! 👋

A guide to some Fediverse terms:

Toot = Post (named after the Mastodon mascot, in theory)

Favourite = Like (there's a separate Bookmark function if you really want to keep track of posts)

Boost = Re-Tweet, shares a post with your followers

Instance = Server = The site you signed up on, each server is independent

Birdsite = Hellsite = Twitter

Fediverse = This place you're on right now, reading this. Mastodon is one kind of server on here, but there are many other types.

@feditips Birdapp is a bit better don't you think, but that's what I use at least

@feditips

Eli Cologne = the guy who is now owning and fucking up the birdsite.

(I wish I had invented that term, but no, comes from a film).

@feditips Re-Toot, surely

@feditips Toot actually comes from Tommy Tallarico HBomberguy who promised to contribute to the mastodon patreon for life if that change was made.

@feditips One addendum: since favoriting something is visible to the person whose post you favorited, it is sometimes also used as "I have seen this and I agree/approve of the intent, but didn't want to spam you with a content-less "I agree!" reply.

@feditips And my own idiosyncratic #Fediverse term:

Twoot: a screenshot of a #tweet in a #toot.

@feditips I wish they would rename favorite to like.

@feditips new wave of migration?

@feditips “Toot” seems to be on its way out though(?) At least in the Mastodon UI. Personally, I welcome that, I have always called them “posts”.

@feditips I know I’m new here, but I will die before I use “toot”
unironically.

@feditips My understanding is that the term "toot" for a post is obsolete:

gizmodo.com/mastodon-toot-reti

Of course, some resist changes in nomenclature, as we see in current politics.

@feditips Hang on. Folks tell me the toot thing was to be deprecated. Some folks are embarrassed with the kiddy connotations, apparently. My instance replaced the "toot" button with a "publish" button, although my mobile app still uses toot. What gives?

@feditips why not actually use these words in the app?

@feditips Community rules = just guidelines if you’re a tankie or “anarchist”.

@feditips Mastodon is not a server.

@feditips isn’t the protocol to boost more than like too?

@feditips

Fediverse = imagine if you could use your twitter account to talk to people on facebook and write comments on youtube. Yes, that's what we've had here on fediverse for some years now.

@feditips what’s the classification name to group Mastodon, Akkoma, Pixelfed, Calckey and the likes of it?
