A single :pixelfed: server hosts 56% of all pixelfed accounts.

Yeah, it is my instance, and I'm the Pixelfed developer, but this isn't healthy or sustainable. This is why pixelfed.social isn't accepting new registrations.

✨ You can find an open server to join on pixelfed.org/servers

@dansup What's the requirements to get listed?
Basically I would like to get listed, but there are maybe two pitfalls for me:
1) I plan to offer a cost plan for like € 1.-/GB/month.
2) I need a working LDAP setup. The current LDAP setup as outlined in docs.pixelfed.org/running-pixe requires manual code changes. That's preventing me in deploying the service on pxlfed.de

@dansup I've barely ever used mine since the very early days. (Combination of becoming a pandemic shut-in and not wanting to fuss with the mobile browser in place of an app.) If I get to the point of picking up being a mobile shutterbug again I'll probably either run my own (as I do for Masto) or migrate away to ease the load & support the ecosystem.

@dansup I joined the Pixey instance in December 2021 and have been happy with it.

According to the Pixelfed directory it's only 1.6K users, so moderate size and the admin is @stux so it is well managed.

If you're thinking of joining a Pixelfed instance I recommend it.

@dansup Should I migrate my account to another instance, to free up space and bandwidth?

@dansup btw, I couldn't figure out how to share a photo from a phone. The forms were kind of not too responsive (borders were glitching out of the screen, as far as I recall) and while being able to make an account (not sure on which instance), I couldn't actually post anything. That's why I decided to post images on #mastodon for the time being.

No judgement, just sharing experinence. Thanks for making / contributing to #PixelFed, looking forward to using it!

@dansup I think part of the problem, as a PF newb myself is all the alternative servers seem to target specific subgroups. As a new user with no relationship to the platform the subtleties of picking the “right” instance is tough. Personally I just stopped at server selection with a note to “come back later”. It’d be nice if the platform encouraged you to start with the main hosted server and migrate as you got comfortable. That implies a whole bevy of features I’m sure so maybe untenable

@dansup At the time I signed up, it seemed like there wasn't really any option... That honestly was quite a while ago. So, that could be a very different situation.

@dansup Unfortunately, I’m only interested in joining that instance, as it’s where my peers are. 🥲

Also, from a personal security standpoint, I’d prefer to join an instance maintained by the original developer, rather than a third-party (hence why I’m on mastodon.social).
