1. I've previously mentioned that I have aphantasia, so I cannot picture things in my mind, so rely on looking at something to draw/paint.

2. I realised that if I stare at a random pattern long enough I often start to see a picture in that pattern.

I thought I would try an experiment to take advantage of point 2, to see if could create something.

The left hand picture is a series of random lines I drew, the right hand one is a scene I picked out

@GrumpyMark Would you then be able to use refernce photos to add detail, or if necssary improve the shapes?

@GrumpyMark That's a great technique!

So then I decided to add colour and the resulting painting is totally unlike anything I'd normally be able to "imagine".

Art from chaos.

@GrumpyMark I also have aphantasia! Often I'll vaguely know what I want to draw and just make marks roughly approximating what they'll be in the end. Very interesting that you do this.

When my kids were small we used to make scribble monsters where they'd draw random shapes and then I'd turn it into a monster 😁

@GrumpyMark

It's great to watch the development of skill, overcoming blocks to do so.

Thanks for sharing this method and insight.

@GrumpyMark I have the same problem, I should give this a go!

@GrumpyMark
hey! nice. You might even have a new sort of art prompt there - offer a random squiggle to people, see how many different pictures emerge.

@GrumpyMark That’s a great idea. Like the result. I have aphantasia too, but I‘m good in seeing patterns or „things“ in random chaos. Will try that too.

@GrumpyMark Very interesting! Although you have aphantasia, you are able to see pareidolia in a random pattern, which we consider an indicator of creative potential in our research group. And a very nice result indeed. I like the coloring a lot! May I ask, how you experience aphantasia?

@GrumpyMark

This is a great strategy

@GrumpyMark Number 2 is a strong power, even if I can imagine the initial picture (I don't see a full composition, just key elements), some "accidental" brushstrokes can give hints how to progress forward.

@GrumpyMark @rifter that’s a very clever work round, you might be able to extend it looking at fractal patterns or randomly generated pixels
