I've spent so much time and energy on the , I'm considering splitting it into a full and light version, where the latter would be open source and published to F-Droid.

Regardless, every app & 3rd party client has access to the same APIs, even the official ones.

@dansup If you develop a proprietary version, it's likely another libre client will surpass it in popularity. Like Tusky.

Please release both as free software. You can still charge copies on mobile stores if you want!

@dansup What kind of differences do you think would exist between the two versions? So how Lite would the Lite app become?

@dansup
I would be happy to pay a one off payment for an app. A subscribtion would be unlikely.

@dansup

Please only do free software / open source versions, not proprietary! :)

Thanks!

@dansup

*Suggesting* doing proprietary versions undermines the nascent community.

From How to Destroy Your Community

"8: Screw around with licensing. Community members tend to care a lot about licenses, so changing the licensing can be a good way to make them go elsewhere. Even better is to talk a lot about license changes without actually changing anything; that will drive away contributors who like the current license without attracting anybody who might like the alleged new license. @dansup dude, I'm sponsoring you on Patreon... you get more from me, than from a one time payment on a store... if you screw around with the licenses, this will piss me off so i have to cancel the patreon sponsorship...

Carry on doing awesome work, I'm sure more sponsors will show up... This will then bring you a greater community, i am sure.

@dansup
Completely understand why you'd consider that given the huge amount of time you've put into it, but I agree with others that keeping it open source will encourage others to contribute to its development. Having a proprietary version may also make some feel they are getting an inferior product simply for their support for open source software. I hope there are other things you can consider to compensate you for your hard work than a proprietary app.

@dansup Please don't do this. Check out FairEmail or NetGuard on FDroid. Both are FOSS. They initially come with limited functionality but all features can be unlocked after a one-time in-app payment. For pixelfed this could for example unlock filters, DMs, Stories,...
No need to maintain 4 apps (2 android, 2 ios) which makes development more complicated and users steadily asking about the difference
