You can DM people on Mastodon by writing a post in "mentioned" visibility mode. In that mode, only accounts mentioned in the post can see it.

You can set post visibility by clicking on the visibility logo below the post:

🌎 - Public visibility, anyone can see it

🔓 - Unlisted, anyone can see it but not on main timelines

🔒 - Followers-only, your followers and anyone mentioned in the post can see it

@ - Mentions, only accounts mentioned can see it.

Question, if i use mentions only can I reference another account without them getting tooted. For instance, if I want to DM a friend with a suggestion about another user, but don't want my comments about them published to that 3rd user. I've be replacing @'s with (at). But that's a bit fiddly!

I Hit the Publish button
Then type my post but,
1)Does it have to start with an “@“?
2)Does the visibility logo show up after I hit publish, because I don’t see one
