p.s. There are LOTS of apps that work with 2FA on Mastodon such as Raivo, Aegis and many others. (They are technically known as "TOTP apps" or "authenticators")

Maybe people can recommend good 2FA apps in the replies?

@feditips I use Google Authenticator, but I don’t think it really matters

@feditips I use the one built into 1Password or BitWarden. No need for a separate app.

@feditips keepass, 1password, bitwarden, most password managers will do this just fine and there's no reason to use a second app.

Just stay away from LastPass :blobfoxthisisfine: . They have always been a horrifying joke, thankfully more people are now realizing it.

Yubikey provides a very good app that works with its token so that the private key is not kept one the device running the app. Also mastodon works directly with yubikeys without using the app which is awesome

@feditips I have uses Authy but switched earlier this year to Duo. It is easy to set and has been reliable.

@feditips a physical key (Yubikey is great) with the app is an ideal solution.

@feditips I used to favor #Authy, but parent company #Twilio’s breach this year that also compromised several dozen Authy accounts spooked me to laboriously move to @bitwarden. This is possibly related to what I believe is poor stewardship since they purchased it in 2015.

Unlike #Bitwarden, Authy does not provide any import or export options. You should make sure you’re not locked into whatever you choose.

I'm happy with Duo Mobile

Android:

play.google.com/store/apps/det

Works well with PUSH notifications, too (not available w/ Mastodon, though).

If your Mastodon login is on the same device 📲 as Duo Mobile, you can have it copy the code to the clipboard 📋 , and then paste it into the Mastodon popup. 😃

@feditips

I already had the Microsoft Authenticator app on my phone to log in to mail, and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to add my Mastodon account.

play.google.com/store/apps/det

So it's possible that people may already have an TOTP app on their phones, and they can just add Mastodon alongside what ever other service they are using.
