@Gargron I started working on Firefox when I was 23! It’s fun doing something you believe in.

@darius @leigh @andrew one of the underdeveloped areas in the space is giving users more control over their experience. I think a lot of things (reactji, exclusive lists, timeline ordering) are more about personal preference than admin preference.

How would you feel about "Show Reactji: Yes / No / Instance Default"?

@darius I think there has to be limits to where community consensus should control. Local timeline? Always. Personal user experience? Never.

@darius @andrew @leigh I think that presumes the information would exist in either case. Instead, I'd argue that Reactji interactions are mostly additive and positive in nature, and those interactions happen because they are easy, low-commitment, and don't add noise.

Users can ignore the information if it exists, but others can't get that value if it doesn't. That, to me, argues against admins disabling the feature, and letting users choose.

@darius that it is noise for you is why user control is paramount. I'm even on board with instance defaults. But I don't think a community should ever impose restrictions on non-harmful feature usage by individuals.

@darius @anthracite I think there’s a gap we can close with Matrix/MLS with some time and resources. It’s on the list, but not quite yet.

I think it starts with something like iMessage/SMS where you can fall back if either/any party doesn’t have an appropriate account configured. This doesn’t need to be the same ID as your Fediverse handle. But it could be!
