@Gargron Similar to how email is being coopted by Google, I can see a situation where some major company creates a Fediverse server that is so good that everybody uses it. Then they'll turn off federation and we're back to where we were before.
Google already did it with XMPP.

@EU_Commission this says the right things, and I'm one of those people who agree with everything said in the video clip.
However, I believe they should go even further. I'm also concerned that it will be very difficult to get these companies to actually comply.

@EU_Commission sadly, 1.8 billion is just cost of doing business for them.

@darius I'm 10 years older than you, and let me tell you. It gets even weirder.

@dansup At the same time this company are supposedly creating something that will federate?
I think that tells us all we need to know.

@dansup Has it been kept up to date though? It says m.s. has 100k users when in fact they broke 200k. And it doesn't mention Akkoma at all.

@feditips On the other hand, statements from someone that I respect, who spent a long time on twitter but finally joined us here, have said, after having spent many months here, that they still believe that the onboarding problem is real.
Don't take me wrong, I agree with you on everything you said. I'd rather see less people join the Fediverse than seeing more centralisation around m.s. But if the goal is to bring more people in, something like this needs to be done.
Perhaps an option would be for instances to make their own application (which would just be one of the common applications, but branded to their instance).
That way, if you wanted to join mstdn.social, you just download the mstdn.social application.
A lot of people these days don't know the difference between an application and a website anyway, so this may actually be more in line with expectations.
