I've been using touchscreen phones since 2008. Typing on one is still an extremely frustrating experience for me, especially typing in Russian. Since it's been this many years of me doing it every day and it still doesn't feel like an extension of my body, it must not a problem with me, but rather with this whole thing that a communication device is terrible at the one job it was supposedly designed for in the first place.

Maybe, just maybe, we might want to rethink some of that stuff.

Consider LRU caching for files you download from remote servers. Basic idea is that you have a configurable storage limit for all downloaded files and you keep track when each of them was last accessed. When downloading a new file would exceed the limit, you delete oldest files until there is enough space.

TikTok without influencers? How is that even possible? The whole concept revolves around there not being any meaningful social interactions and everything you see being picked by an algorithm. And when there's a recommendation algorithm, there are influencers.

For Smithereen, I plan on just having app developers include their push keys in their app metadata. They're not of any use without device tokens anyway so they should be safe to publish. The sending will be done by each user's server, there will be no centralized push gateway.

There's also one thing that annoys me about Misskey and Pleroma. They don't return the replies collection for posts, thus preventing Smithereen from loading complete reply threads.

Why would they ever not be reusable? The very idea of a username not getting freed when the corresponding account is deleted feels extremely bizarre to me.
