@ted @badrihippo a big problem (from my outside perspective) is that historically Mastodon has lacked in formal ux designers on the team (I believe this is no longer true). So "more choice" would have likely resulted in the usual open source ui nightmare control panel. I am optimistic that with better design talent looking at Mastodon we can find solutions here

@darius @ted I've seen many projects with all the functions but no polish, so maybe it's a good thing Mastodon didn't try too many optimisations before the formal UI/UX people came in! 😛

As someone who hasn't used Twitter much, though, I'm quite happy with the look and feel—it's pretty polished and professional and I've rarely been frustrated! Looks like apart from the algorithms (and things like the quote-toot debate) we've got things sorted
