@dansup Believe it or not, I think simply *not telling* a new user that their posts are unlisted is a better experience. Yes, continue to unlist the images, but suppress notifications until the account is at least n days old. Add a tiny subtitle when they are posting their first image that says “Since you are a new user, your posts may be unlisted for the first n days to avoid spam. You can still share your photos with your friends, but they won’t be searchable or appear in the local timeline for a few days.” or something like that.
Setting expectations is key. I expected my posts to be fully participating in the system, and I was disappointed to see those notifications. They seem punitive.
