@aaron here's the official rationale. A big piece was having search isolated from the DB so if search slows things down, at least other features aren't impacted. I do not know if this is reasonable as this isn't my wheelhouse https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/6423#issuecomment-363216907
