You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features.

Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps.

:android: On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot

:apple_inc: On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona

@feditips maybe a good tip to add js that custom emojis are client/app based - I just realized this (on Ivory and it's not implemented yet)

@feditips Although a warning for new users thinking of trying Tusky: for reasons known only to the author it doesn't include the Trending Posts feed, so you're going to be missing out on one of the most important features to help you get started and discover accounts to follow.

My advise is to just use the webversion, even (no, especially) on mobile, I have tried a few 3rd party apps, but have yet to find one benefit over the webversion. Especially when you're on a pc, the advanced webversion is very powerful

@feditips

I find Tusky gives me more feedback than the web version. I often (usually?) don't see replies from people on other servers with the web app, but I do on Tusky.

I know this is something they are working on the the web app.

+1 for Fedilab, it's feature rich and they patch often.

@feditips On iPhone, there's also Metatext. I've been using it for several months and am very satisfied.

@feditips shoutout to Woolly, my current favourite for iOS and MacOS mastodon.social/@woollyapp. Radiant is also looking great (iOS only) mastodon.radiant.social/@radia.

@feditips People are idiots, they do not like choice, they prefer to be told what to do, and they require the simplest of UI as humanly possible. Without the need to learn a Foreign Language, which is any set of words not associated with the most basics of their every day language.
It would behove the Fediverse to acknowlegde this fact and work towards a singular vehicle and UI. The same issue is going on in Linux. Too much choices.
