@searls that said, it does look incredibly weird that the ‘furigana’ here is in katakana for a different word.

@megamatt yeah, whenever a different phonetic word is paired with a set of symbols (explicitly or implicitly), it's considered 当て字 (ateji), but it's a little unusual for it to be so on the nose as to have katakana as furigana IME. I could see someone without a lot of cultural experience being really confused by this sort of thing
