Mastodon.social and mastodon.online are being hammered especially hard.

Don't panic if your server seems unresponsive, this isn't normal on here, it's a temporary thing due to the influx of new members continuing to grow.

Normally there's a steady stream of new members and the servers work fine. This is an unusual unprecedentedly large event 😅
