E.g. if you're working in commercial software, you (the designer) are given time to understand what the software is, does, what the user needs, etc.

How does anyone expect a designer, contributing to FOSS in their personal time, to get that level of context from 0? It's very difficult.

This is why I say the community needs to be welcoming first and give the designer time to learn.
