@dansup The dev docs he linked are over my head. Is their federation compatible at all with ActivityPub or the rest of the fedi? Or did they build a different standard?

Completeley different. As for 'algorithmic choice':

Looks like there's no open standards in there, but also focused on ease-of-implementation.
