Two things that are really important on here:

♿ Add text descriptions to your images/videos/audio. Accessibility is fundamental. More info: fedi.tips/mastodon-and-fediver

⚠️ Use Content Warnings on anything that people may not want to read right now. It could be upsetting like violence or politics, mild like movie spoilers, but either way it shows empathy and consideration for strangers. More info: fedi.tips/staying-safe-on-mast

These features are key to keeping this place friendly. Please use them. 🙏 ❤️

It’s Meaghan! On Mastodon

@feditips @Just_Dave One thing I’ve found useful is that some apps like #Toot! provide an option to remind you to add #alttext before posting. Now, if it could do the same for #CWs, that would be super!

@feditips And never toot wordle results without CV. Those are a nightmare for screen readers.

@feditips agreed about CW except in cases of anti racist or other anti kyriarchy dissent.

@feditips I find it helpful to also think of CW as Content Wrapper: a headline for readers to click on if interested, while speeding thru an increasingly busy timeline!

Oh that's confusingly rendered. That was a retweet (or whatever it's called) from Mastodon, which wasn't really clear from the way it displayed.

@feditips I'm hoping content warnings end up being a solution to helping to manage climate doom on my timeline and when I engage with it

@feditips I've been here a week now, and it seems to me that for a lot of newcomers the word "warning" is an obstacle to using CWs sensibly—I'm seeing a lot of "I don't see why my news stories need CWs, since they're what people follow me for and it's just ordinary news stuff" rather than "Hey, here's a handy 'show more' feature I can use so people just see the headline!"

@EcolJim @scitjc @pj_saez RE your recent introduction. Please see the above toot from feditips about aligning your toots better with the Fediverse. We all make mistakes so it's not a crisis, but we all have to work to make this network the a place where folks feel safe and welcome. This is especially important if you see this as a place for networking or scicomm.

Welcome to the fediverse! 👋
