WIth Reddit self-destructing, many have been wondering about alternatives on the Fediverse.

I do NOT recommend Lemmy. I have serious long-standing deep concerns about the developers, see here: mstdn.social/@feditips/1068350

As far as I know, nothing has changed since then and Lemmy's issues remain.

Alternatively there's Kbin (kbin.social & kbin.pub) which seems less problematic, though its account features incl. a crypto wallet manager :/

@feditips Thanks for the info. There's been a big push towards Lemmy and I'd rather know what's up, now, than after making an investment there (or anywhere.)

@feditips have to disagree. Let's take the Lemmy software and host our own instances where the devs and their bigotry means nothing. Their bigotry is in their moderation, not in the source code.

@feditips Hoooly crap, thank you for bringing this to my attention. I am fed up with the dumpster fire that Reddit has become and have no desire just to move into another one

@feditips Reddit self-destructing? Could you elaborate, and give me/us a link?

@feditips @rysiek I’m not thrilled about kbin’s api, it doesn’t appear to actually be activitypub, even tho they call it that. None of the objects even use the activitypub context, it’s their own context built on hydra. It’s really just a json-ld api.

@feditips reddit is self destructing? How?

@feditips This strikes me as a pretty poor reason to tell people not to use it to be honest.

I don't agree with the devs on this either, but that doesn't seem like a good enough reason to disregard Lemmy in its entirety. Instances can and sometimes do choose not to federate with these instances (especially the main instance that platforms these views in lemmygrad), and the main instance seems increasingly neutral.

Maybe it's because my politics aren't shared by many, but I don't see this as sufficient reason not to use certain software. Ultimately Lemmy is what people make of it and I think having people with different views using it and having their own instances will be a good thing for it.

@feditips damn, you know, I tried to follow your advise and used /kbin but that federates with lemmy.ml

I saw someone posting a link to the "China tightens access to Tiananmen Square while 32 are detained in Hong Kong (npr.org)" article and suddenly TS massacre deniers craws out of the woods with @lemmy.ml usernames and telling people to perhaps use a different instance to post anti-china links because they don't want to be defederated by lemmygrad and even worse posting outright denial.

@feditips @devinprater but kbin is probably less accessible with a screenreader.

@feditips You ever notice how the only acceptable left-wing positions are those that just happen to align completely with the western countries' geopolitics?

@feditips thanks for the heads up. I'm kind of new to this. But are other instances ran by other people within lemmy that might be better? For example know a couple of. Domains. One under the name

.world

I thought maybe they are like different mastodon servers?

Sorry if I'm not making much sense

@feditips it's a matter of time until there's a proper fork.

@feditips hope it won't be killed by SEC. They just murder every crypto based service

@feditips that’s a crying shame.

In reality, even just playing around to stand it up temporarily was not an awesome experience.

Seems like #fediverse has a couple opts. Fork, start over, or #kbin

Those opts are strictly off the top of my head, and I have not tried kbin at all yet. Alternatively, “something else” might well prove better.
