@Brendanjones @jsit @scottjenson Correct, this privacy setting does not work like you would expect a DM to work (how it threads, who can see), so we try to avoid UX similarities on purpose to prevent people from relying on them too much. There's a long-standing plan of adding encrypted DMs as a standalone feature.

@Gargron @Brendanjones @scottjenson Correct me if I’m wrong, but encrypted DMs would be a non-standard complement to ActivityPub, and therefore anything other than Mastodon that wanted to use DMs would need to adopt this non-standard Mastodon feature? The link I posted indicates that the w3c considers the issue settled and won’t add “true” DMs to the spec.
