If you're wondering why some people have much larger character limits, the explanation will be one of these:

-They are on a Mastodon server where the admin has tweaked the code to allow higher limits (this is a bit tricky, vanilla Mastodon doesn't officially support this)

-They are on a fork of Mastodon such as Glitch or Hometown, which support adjustable character limits

-They are on a non-Mastodon Fediverse server such as Friendica or Calckey or WordPress which support much higher limits

@feditips you can use @mastowatch to check the character limit for any Mastodon server too, as well as file upload limit.

@feditips I normally have a 500 character limit, but have discovered that sometimes when replying to a post my characters are limited to far fewer. Is this because I am replying to an account on a server that severely limits characters?
It has happened maybe half a dozen times. No big deal. Just curious.

@feditips My limit is 500 characters. I'm not sure if that's normal for mastodon or not.

@feditips quick question hope it’s not a FAQ: in my timeline browse this post is shown as having 5 replies but when I click on the post it’s suddenly 10. Is that an issue with the client, @IceCubesApp ?
