I think it's partly for privacy and mental health reasons, so that people can "opt in" to a public discussion about a topic by including the tag.

There's a lot of discussion about safety and mental health in the various development forums on here.

It hopefully makes it a bit calmer here, bit less toxic.

@feditips @lashman : in a way that makes sense. It reminds me of the answer I got when I asked about quoted-toots. But it also makes looking for specific things complicated.
But I'm still puzzled. For instance I tried searching specific hashtags (say, #notion). Nothing came up but other were suggested (#notionhq for instance). But because there was no recent toot, I got zero result ? I can't see older things on top of not seeing non-hashtagged things ?
