p.p.s. You don't have to order books from giant online retailers. Small independent physical bookshops can get pretty much any book you want, and will let you know when it arrives.

All you have to do is tell the bookshop the name of the book and the author(s), they'll get it from their wholesaler and the profits will be supporting a small indie business instead of a big near-monopoly. Wholesalers can get a book to a shop surprisingly quickly, sometimes quicker than ordering online!

@feditips

If the employees and of the local bookstore as well as their customers start wearing masks again… count me in!

Until then, as much as possible and necessary will be ordered online. 🤷‍♂️

I make a point of buying new books from indie sellers. It's important.

FediTips has moved!

p.p.p.s As @jan points out, there are also online ordering services which help to support indie shops at bookshop.org and hive.co.uk

The indie shops will get more if you order direct from them, but these online options at least give indie shops some support.

@feditips YES! I ask indie bookstores to bring in books so I can buy from them. Local small independent bookstores - offline & online - need regular support from book lovers! Give your indie bookstore lots of love & support! It helps them to survive ❤

@feditips Hive books is good, a cooperative of indie bookshops. Often cheaper than Amazon.

That‘s exactly my experience, too.
Call them in the afternoon - book arrived the next morning 😊

@feditips I agree with this, BUT, without Amazon, I couldn't publish at all. I don't have connections, and agents and publishers get thousands of submissions every single day. Jeff Bezos, bless his penis rocket heart, made it possible for anyone to publish to the world for free. That is huge.

@feditips I've been doing this for a few years now except since I learned that although my only local indie is a children's book shop they can get almost any other book too. It's been much nicer than going to BN or trying to get it on Amazon too be honest.

@feditips if you require eBooks, try stores like Smashwords that have multiple formats and the possibility of free revisions should the author find something egregious
