Years ago at a family gathering for some reason I said dogs evolved from wolves, and my brother-in-law said “not all dogs”.

I let it slide at the time as I was too bewildered by this statement, but it still haunts my thoughts.

What did he mean “not all dogs”?? Does he think not all dogs are the same species?? In his mind, not all dogs are… dogs?? What??
