I dunno if this is common or not, but I draw my cut plans kinds like Sankey diagrams, showing the flow of the raw boards through resaw, cross-cut, to finished pieces. A_1^2 means piece of wood A, crosscut chunk 1, resaw piece 2. Final pieces have a diff notation that's project-specific: S1.6b is shelf to the far left, sixth level, back part.
