@TerribleMaps the 381 x 381 km don’t have a meaning to me until I know, what unit they are based on. One might think that this number is based on km since nothing else is specified… so what is the unit on which this number is based on? Is it Meter, Millimeter, dot (72 dpi) or what?
@TerribleMaps it's been a long time since I looked at it, but the "smart pen" options with proprietary paper (looks gray, actually a printed grid) used a grid with a fixed maximum size something like this. Different areas of pattern were allocated to different organizations.
Remembered while writing: Anoto.
@TerribleMaps this map is, in fact, amazing!
@TerribleMaps there's an old line, "The map is not the territory, but you can't fold up the territory and put it in your glove compartment"
Clearly, whoever came up with that line was insufficiently ambitious!
@TerribleMaps for German audiences: those are 20.330.672 68 × 105m football pitches.
@TerribleMaps help there's a PDF on top of me
@TerribleMaps Hold on, I just looked this up and it's TRUE. There's nothing terrible about this map
Me: Computer, please create a new pdf in A 4 format.
Computer: Sure! A new pdf measuring one Bundesautobahn 4 by one Bundesautobahn 4
@TerribleMaps So, NATO just need a simple PDF to shield us from crazy dictators ? Technology is amazing.
@TerribleMaps in fact, it was a direct request of the German government to enable this format. The normal citizen should be able to print his/her tax declaration on just 10 pages using font size 10 pt.
@TerribleMaps
In that Empire, the Art of Cartography attained such Perfection that the map of a single Province occupied the entirety of a City, and the map of the Empire, the entirety of a Province. In time, those Unconscionable Maps no longer satisfied, and the Cartographers Guilds struck a Map of the Empire whose size was that of the Empire, and which coincided point for point with it...
@TerribleMaps Borgès sucking his teeth derisively
@TerribleMaps This image calls out Mastodon's placebo loading progress bar.
@TerribleMaps Austria would fit area-wise but probably not actually, so unless the next version of pdf has accommodations for weirdly shaped countries it’s a no thanks from us
@TerribleMaps Borges would approve
@TerribleMaps Also man KÖNNTE eine 1:1 Landkarte erstellen, wie schon so oft imaginiert...: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karte_im_Ma%C3%9Fstab_1:1
