@signalapp I do support what you are doing, but two of the more expensive things you do are things I wish you were not doing. Like verifying phone numbers and contact cross referencing.

@signalapp I love the transparency on costs and how they work almost as much as I love the Signal app!

@signalapp Also, I'm not sure why you're paying separate platform teams and then making a macOS Electron app. I'd be much more inclined to donate if you had a native macOS app, something that should be fairly easy to do these days with SwiftUI (in that you can leverage most of the work across all Apple platforms).

@signalapp For anyone that prefers podcasts, Meredith also spoke about this on an amazing podcast episode last year -

Decoder with Nilay Patel: Why Signal won’t compromise on encryption, with president Meredith Whittaker

[Tiny editorial comment… no need to use the word “dollars” everywhere if you show the dollar sign to the left of each amount… it’s redundant]

@signalapp
Great if voluntarily donations keep you running, if it doesn’t, you should charge people. Nothing wrong with demanding money for a product you provide.

@signalapp
It's a bit ironic that you go to a decentralized platform to complain about the costs to run a centralized platform. You have deliberately decided against #federation with other servers (github.com/LibreSignal/LibreSi), saying that it "no longer ha[s] a place in the modern world". I'd say that the success of #mastodon and the #fediverse has shown otherwise.

@signalapp blog post ends with buttons to share on Twitter and Facebook. Maybe it is not bad idea to include share on Mastodon, especially on Signal's blog

@signalapp
Hi, I'll be happy to donate again monthly when or if you will provide an answer to this 5 year old feature request - for which a patch has been proposed in Github :
community.signalusers.org/t/sa

It's a basic but very useful feature - being able to choose in the settings where to store downloaded media instead of the generic "Pictures" folder and avoiding putting "garbage" in it, or wasting time with the gallery app' to move each photo in another location - for example a "Signal" folder ! 😏

Wenn ihr das Geld verschmerzen könnt, könnt ihr in den Einstellungen von Signal eine regelmäßige Spende einrichten und so helfen, sichere Kommunikation für alle aufrecht zu erhalten.

@signalapp I wish you had a recurring donation less than $5/month. I would do $2/month or $20 per year subscription. Having to remember to manually donate is easy to forget but the recurring are too expensive for me. I love the service and your philosophy but i only have one contact in Signal and use the app a couple times a month. You used to accept single payments of $1, but now it’s minimum $5 . This is $1 per message for someone like me 😅

@signalapp disable nagging me weekly to turn on my Contacts list, and informing everyone on my list that I'm a Signal user - two big privacy no-no's - and you'll absolutely get monthly donations from me! :)

@signalapp #signal is expensive because it is a single monolith service which has to handle all users. #redecentralize #decentralization #federation #matrix #xmpp

@signalapp fascinating that the registration fees ($6m, probably only used for sign ups) are more than double the data transfer cost ($2.8m, presumably used all the time).

As long as Signal needs telephone number for activation it's a NoGo!
Change that and we gonna be friends.
