@darius @danhon @meetar @danhon @meetar I don't think any UX or nomenclature tweaks can save mastodon "DMs" from being user (and operator!) hostile. (The suggestion in that thread to rename them to "private mentions" is in out-of-the-frying-pan territory, i.e. they're far less private in practical terms than even e.g. twitter DMs)

IMO: replace it with something actually private/direct (e2e or bust); otherwise, let's just have an easy/dedicated path to linking to a e.g. signal account.
