One of the most under-used features of Mastodon is audio. You can attach audio files to your posts, they can be in MP3, OGG, WAV, FLAC, OPUS, AAC, M4A or 3GP formats. They can be any length, as long as the file size is under 40 megabytes (some servers may have even higher limits).

I've attached an example audio file to this post, you should be able to play it on most interfaces and apps.

@feditips I wish more of the apps had an option to play sound files in the background while you continue to browse other posts

@feditips Well, vocalsynth people use it alot. I guess other musicians also utilize this feature to post demo or stuffs.

@feditips given that you can make any Mastodon adress into an RSS feed, would this hypothetically work as a means of disributing a podcast in some weird way, or have any other flavor of the Fediverse done something like that?

@feditips Using @Tusky the music plays a treat, but there's no sign of the implied image.

Such a great feature, I can’t believe forgot about it! I think I used it once, shortly after joining Mastodon: mastodon.social/@meganmariehar

@feditips How does Masto Web get a thumbnail for the media. Is it embedded in the post?

Lyokolux

@feditips Hi from the Elk interface. It renders as a native audio player and the sound is good.

@feditips Thanks! Sound is seriously overlooked on many other platforms (though I'm not hearing any music - when I press the 'play' arrow, the icon changes to pause, but the clock does not count up, and there's no sound).

@feditips OMG how did I not know about this? I'm a musician! Thank you for posting. I've already used it to post a song I've made here.

@feditips I initially considered sharing some of my original music as audio files here but posting links to it hosted elsewhere works great and it is keeping with the idea of going easy on instances with media attachments.

Even though i donate to my instance monthly i still don't want to fill up @jerry's instance with media files but it is a good thing to know about for those learning from this post.

@feditips under-used?
Why is it even there?
Isn’t it enough that we get videos without subtitles all over the internet?

What happens if I attach an Ogg Vorbis- or Opus audio track and someone looks at my post using a vanilla MacOS installation? Does it show up as downloadable attachment?
Or does the Mastodon instance server, were it was uploaded convert it, perhaps to mp3?
(I don't use MacOS and last time I checked - like 3 months ago - this was a problem).

Robert Jung - Film Composer ✅

@feditips the main problem for audio artists is that a simple audio attached to a post just does not cut it anymore in this day and age. so we end up just using video since it just gathers more attention in the federated timeline.
