@liaizon @pixelfed Well, we already display a random list of instances to join.

I thought that that step could be overwhelming to a new user, and that's why I wanted to default to my instance (and also provide an option to browse available instances)

Two buttons
<Join pixelfed.xxx>
<Select another server>

@dansup @liaizon @pixelfed I like that, to be honest.

@dansup @liaizon @pixelfed The simple fix I think we're proposing is, instead of showing a list, just default to a random server from the list, instead of the one "flagship".

Great ideas! Two more to consider:

(1) Add a question + hint text to the flow
Q: Would you like to select a specific server?
H: Most people likely won't notice or care. Plus this can be changed later if you change your mind.
<No, randomly choose for me>
<Yes, I'll select my server>

Maybe you could have a 'Join Pixelfed' and an 'Expert Mode' button.
When you choose 'Join Pixelfed', you get to a 'Choose a username' page with an input field for your username. Right next to that an '@' and then a wheel/dropdown with a randomly sorted list of server domains that you can choose. New users would still be choosing their server, but it would be abstracted behind customizing your user name.
