"Explore" is a really useful feature on Mastodon which lets you see trending posts and trending hashtags.

If you're using the official Mastodon app, click on the magnifying glass 🔍 at the bottom of the screen but do not enter anything in the search box. Tabs will appear that show trending posts ("Posts"), trending tags ("Hashtags"), trending links ("News") and the latest public posts on your server ("Community").

If you're using your server's website, click on # Explore or the # icon.

@feditips I don't know if I agree how useful it is. Especially for the beginners, they should stay away from explore. It's a hornets nest of doomers. Occasionally a fun post makes through but not often. You first have to get your feet wet here, get a good set of people blocked or muted, then explore becomes much more usable.

@feditips last time I clicked "explore" it was 90% people posting either an opinion on, or a short summary of, the hot political thing of the moment. and no tags

@feditips I pretty much love the explore feature, but it has one flaw which is that if you use it more often than once a day, you get a ton of duplicates that you have already seen. I would like it if there was some way to "explore new". Even once a day you get some duplication, but not the 74% as when you use it after three hours. I find myself scrolling quickly looking for recent timestamps, to read the content. "Can't the computer do that for me?"

It's good to have "Trending" as a less advertised feature, because I couldn't care less about what's popular. It would be nice if niche quality posts got the traction to spread the attention evenly.
