@ali @darius @danhon @lmorchard I have not a lot of experience with ActivityPub but if I were to design this, I’d have denormalization when posting (client or original server adds a full copy of quoted post) and that gets distributed. There’s no need for recipient servers to check validity because they already trust the poster and the server. Some servers, e.g. those for journalists or whatever might want to add extra confirmation steps.

This is totally untrue. Federation happens with servers you have never heard of. You could pop over to the federated timeline and see someone with a "quote" that is completely fabricated if you simply trusted attached/embedded content
