Hey new people and those thinking of joining, you do NOT need to sign up on huge servers!

You can follow and interact with people on any server from any server, the servers are connected.

It would really, really help the network right now if you could sign up on medium or small size servers. You will still be able to follow and interact with whoever you want, and the network as a whole will work much better.

A good safe place for beginners to find servers to join is joinmastodon.org/servers

@feditips my friend and I discovered not all servers show us each other's message? Like she joined a Japanese one and we are unable to see each other. Is there a way around this?

@feditips Pretty weird how Mastodon asks people to choose a server, but obviously they have no idea how to select so go for something that seems safe, but then apparently it doesn't make any difference anyway.

@feditips

FWIK (have learned so far)

The key is to share your full username (with server/namespace in it, e.g., [@]feditips[@]mstdn.social) and potential followers should verify this also.

Its different, but not so much really. I wouldn't assume that 'john.doe[@]evil.net' is the same as 'john.doe[@]notevil.net' are the same person. So too it goes with the 'verse.

Joining multiple servers won't help, may even further confuse friends and followers, the opposite of intended.

@feditips as I understand, so far, the reliability, backup. archiving, etc. of indiv servers is a concern. that's why I asked about plan to develop longer term.

@feditips Yes and No, if I’m lucky I can see them on a federated timeline, otherwise the default privacy settings seem to limit my ability to look at who people I respect are following. @adamdavidson shared this toot, but when I look to see who he is following this is what I see, which isn’t helpful.

@feditips I wish I had known that before signing up. Can we change servers after signing up?

@feditips thanks! I have a question - can you join more than one? What if you want to change server if a new one gets made you’d prefer to be on?

@feditips Not been able to follow people on mastodon.social or mastodon.online even following the cut and paste into the browser you are logged in on. Any advice?

@feditips And they can also stand up their own server if they want. That is what I did. :)

@feditips Can anyone explain why there seems to be lots of servers I couldn't pick? Such as mstdn.social that you're on?

Now I just chose one at random that seemed general and gave me a nice short address. I hope this doesn't impact my experience in some way.

Anyway, here now. Off to explore and see if I understand what I'm doing.

@feditips can you switch service once you've joined? It would have been helpful to have this link before I actually signed up. LOL I honestly have no idea what I'm doing right now 😂😂😂
