@darius i mean, they own the next two biggest instances so those will, or probably already do, federate. either way almost a quarter of all mastodon instances are now one corporation. direct negotiation and working with admins of other instances will eventually lead to re-federation, i guarantee you

@darius @beka_valentine The previously-separate Japanese Mastodon servers this company bought federated with Pawoo though. I think this is one of those things where language barriers kind of naturally gave the impression Pawoo was an island to itself that no one else talked to, but I get the impression that's not true.

@darius @beka_valentine

Unless the new owner manages to clean up the *existing* material there, wouldn't it still be possible for CSAM to get boosted into federating instances' users' inboxes? Unless federation is unexpectedly sophisticated, once you federate you're opening yourself up to the other instance's whole archive, aren't you? If I were an instance operator I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole.

@darius @beka_valentine yeah, you know that whole thing about the means by which you build power becoming binding on the institution you create? it's nice to see that affecting a group whose goals are at odds with ours for once
