@humanetech @IgnisIncendio DID is another underspecified thing which would be likely to create fragmentation due to the lack of any singular underlying identity mechanism. This is a recipe for further balkanisation/division into identity silos, rather than unification of the internet as a global publically accessible system.

Yes indeed. The standardization of DID by final approvement of TBL has shifted the struggle to get good open standards to that large list of DID methods that are already registered (and maybe more to come). Hopefully in this area there's some quick convergence on one or just few to be broadly acceptable and not blockchain-based.
