So Seth Abramson is one of the sloppiest public thinkers I have ever encountered, who circa 2016 helped invent the rhetorical style of the buckle-up-for-some-politics Twitter mega-thread. He has advised people who listen to him that they should avoid "Mastodon" (he means the Fediverse I think).

I cannot overstate how much this means we are doing something right over here.

@darius 🎯 that guy is a classic Resistance grifter who peddles falsehoods. Of course he doesn’t want people to go to a platform that offers decentralized knowledge 🥴

@darius Regardless of what we think of the quality of his work, isn't it a little concerning that he got banned (seemingly) arbitrarily? To his point, if it were from a niche server I wouldn't care, but if it's from one of the big ones, it does worry me. I think overall he misses the point of the fediverse, but still, his concerns about moderation seem legitimate to me.

@darius Maybe he should stay on Twitter.

@darius
A 200+ comment thread of people piling up on a guy for essentially being a nerd— not that he did something abusive or harsh to anyone— but “we just don’t like him so haha he got booted!” Feels yucky. I originally read his post just to try to understand how this whole thing works and I do find it concerning that your account can just be deleted with no reason given. “Harrowing” doesn’t seem terribly inapt, if I imagine it happening to other social media accounts I’ve had.

@darius
I have never understood the panic over "admins can read your DMs." Admins can also read your e-mail if they are bored out of their minds but I don't see anyone panicking over that. It has been said of all superusers: with great power comes great responsibility.

@darius never used Twitter. Just started using mastadon. I'm really enjoying it so far!

@darius Hilariously halfway down the comments he says he refuses to ask the admin why he was banned because that's "not his job", but apparently it is his job to write thousands of words of rant about it

@darius So he got mystery banned and didn't investigate why, which is what a journalist would do.

It's also what a lawyer would do. Seth's a lawyer.

As a lawyer he knows, or should know, that pleading your case requires having as much evidence as you can that supports your case. You don't necessarily have to introduce it, but you've got to have it, and he just blew that part off.

So we're left with (a) no clue what happened, and (b) a Proustian-length complaint, or rant, or whatever it is, condemning an alternative to proprietary social media.

He left out the most important element, the one element we all need to know to understand this situation.That's all I got.

@darius all I can say is, and I know he'll never see this (because he's been banned) but, if I had a mastodon instance I'd ban him on sight too

@darius how would he have lost access to his account though?

@darius bah, it's best to just ignore these people. They add nothing valuable to society.

@darius He is chilled to the bone after learning that the administrator of a server can access content on that server.

@darius What an intellectually lazy screed that was. He has no concept of word economy. Why use one word when you can use a thousand?

@darius Seth sure is making a big fuss for a libertarian who claims to be civil!

@darius It's like the men in the 90s who'd shout into cell phones to show how important they were.
