There are benefits and drawbacks from using a centralized discovery service like I’m doing with beagle.

Yes, it’s centralized, but it’s a small price to pay for such a groundbreaking feature. It’s complementary to our platform’s decentralized structure and I look forward to shipping this and am eager to hear your feedback!

Pixelfed isn’t just mine anymore, and if the community feels this isn’t a good fit I will drop it, but I think there is potential here.

Let me know!

@dansup I’m excited to see what comes of it.

I think it’s a happy medium that some people are looking for in regards to discovery while still maintain the autonomy of decentralized software.

Personally, I think if you see it through, it should be something Pixelfed instances opt-into.

@dansup Even if the community rejects it, it would be nice to keep it disabled behind a toggle for those who would like to use it.

@dansup I think you are still the best person to lead the project.

At the same time, more people could be involved if all the source code was available (ie: the source code of the mobile app and those additional websites)

@dansup I wish there was an API and plug-in web-based discovery services for all Fediverse apps. Then I could have a list of my xx favorite ones with the parameters I like that I could switch to in a second and that list was seamlessly available across mobile/desktop/browser. Sound like magic? Sure. But #pixelfed sounded like magic to me 6 months ago.

@dansup I like Pixelfed a lot and hope to use it more in the future.
One thing that's on my mind is - Mastodon instances are fairly transparent in what instances are de-federated and why. Something like that on Pixelfed would be beneficial in my opinion.
On this, I'd love a mind map style view of what hashtags are trending but preferably in app.

@dansup
As a recent conversation about Stafford Beer said, a viable system needs a combination of decentralized and centralized parts.

@dansup I feel like the idea behind centralization isn't necessarily bad! It's rather where it tends to end up after enough growth that is haha. I think it sounds like a great idea that will likely fix one of the biggest hurdles regarding drawing people off Facebook and Twitter's teat

@dansup could it be distributed, ala gnutella style server chaining?

@dansup This community member loves it! The discovery feature helps me find those excellent photographers, all across the fediverse. So many exciting new people to follow, be inspired by and learn from!

@dansup isn't it also the case for Peertube? If I remember correctly they also went that route with Sepia Search. IMO there's nothing wrong with this. As long as these trends and the way this is implemented is transparent and not tempered with. Thinking of "author_is_elon" 😅
