If the person I'm talking to chose to have a public conversation, I need to have a good reason to go private.

If I start a conversation in public, I expect it to stay there.

Mostly, for me, it comes down to having experienced a lot of abuse that hid itself in DMs.

This is a really important consideration as well, sometimes leaving part of the conversation private allows speculation and more rarely abuse.
Keeping it public makes it more "honest" for both parties if the conversation started publicly.
