I didn't create @pixelfed for myself, and despite my best intentions, I can be wrong sometimes.

My recent post about app onboarding has received both positive and negative feedback, and I'd like to explore alternative solutions to this with feedback from @liaizon, @feditips and anyone else before we proceed.

Pixelfed is for the people, when you speak we listen, and we strive for community consensus despite my own opinion.

Pixelfed is powered by people like you, don't forget that ❤️

is there something like Mastodon's covenant for PixelFed, or a classification for the instance theme? If so, the app could offer a roundrobin pick among the international generalist instances of the covenant, plus a “help me choose a community”.

So, I came to the :fediverse: looking for decentralization, hoping not to see a "instance makes it all" situation as many of the examples that we came from.
My solution: make a selector on the registration page, so you can choose between a range of instances depending of location, interest or language.
I know people have issues making a decision but it's the price of decentralization.

@dansup that's one of the magic I see here : ppl are capable of saying "I'm sorry I was wrong, I didn't see it that way" ..

It's wonderful that you care enough to consider all possible options. This is how #fediverse should be.

@dansup @pixelfed @liaizon @feditips The solution has got to be to educate the public about decentralization and what the heck an "instance" is. Monoliths are at risk of failure, no matter how large they are.

I'm convinced the two-button solution you're contemplating — default server / "let me choose" — is the only one that will work, and the only one that is *fair to new users*.

Making signup a sort of roulette among multiple servers would expose newbies to the risk of problems that are not in your control, as well as create confusion as to who and what they are dealing with. If they have questions, whom do they ask?
