I'm a complete newbie, and I couldn't understand the criteria I should use to pick one server over another. So, the default was to pick the "original". I'm still a newbie - but I still don't see how the choice of server makes a difference.

Lack of info about the others or any good reason to choose them over the largest instance that I knew more about.

My signup preceded the recent influx a little so I wasn't thinking about load sharing either.

If there had been a music focused server with open reg and no genre focus, and mostly in english, I would have chosen that.

basically mastodon.social has the status of a default and if that's to change then something will have to actively change it.
