Textual UI's may come a long way of offering good UX. I have a weakness for text adventures, as I built them as a kid with my dad :)
Professional, special-purpose software is often very information dense and having clear step-through flows and key shortcuts for everything. They are for workers using them every day.
For the majority of people they are used to richer visuals to 'anchor' them into the UX, is my feeling (but I'm no UX'er).
