Victor Venema

I joined Mastodon a bit over four years ago. Many of my generation seem to fear that Mastodon will become like Twitter with all the new people. I do not.

The idea seems to be that Mastodon is so nice because its people are nice. I believe most people are nice. Twitter has been set up in a way to make us into monsters and to make the worst monsters look like average folks.

The design choices of Mastodon do the reverse. We will become a bit more like Twitter, but mostly stay Mastodon by design.

@VictorVenema I totally agree, a true social network is made by people
they forced us to believe that our interactions would be the focal point, no, the people are the focal point. Power to the people, to the content we create and we choose to share with others, we can build a network free of corp that would make money on our activity

@VictorVenema

I think you are right, we have the tools and means to ensure those who wish to troll or display hate, will find we block /report them. As we also publish / share block lists I think that makes it harder to just move and easier for new instances to sync their moderation

Should help keep people safe.

@VictorVenema Any social media is as good as the people who use it. I'm hoping have a nice positive time on Mastodon.

@VictorVenema the clout chasers are not really thriving here.

@VictorVenema

I've often thought that the foundation of culture is geography. The geography nudges the people in it to conduct themselves in a certain way.

@VictorVenema thanks for the message! And thanks for all the work.

I'm sorry to disturb in the thread but taking this opportunity, as a newcomer: i' using both web browser (firefox on ubuntu) & mastodon app on android, and see that on the latter (i) i see much more posts than on browser,and (ii) i see the number of boosts and favorites (not on browser). Is there something i'm missing / misunderstanding, parameters, is it by fediverse design? Sorry if question is odd, couldn't find answer online

@VictorVenema I'm much happier on Mastodon, but I think that's partly due to the server I call home and the moderation principles and practices there. Twitter was barely moderated, usually confusingly and ineptly. My home server (mastodon.art) has an active and transparent moderation team/policy. I like that.

@VictorVenema You start to see that Twitter is not configured for the end user's benefit when you compare. Twitter uses an algorithm and features to push a lot of content from people you don't follow. They don't care about negative engagement. Any engagement helps advertising.

You could say Twitter is an antisocial network.

@VictorVenema I think you are right. I am new on here and know a lot of people who have migrated over the last week. All of us are saying how less toxic it is over here. How relaxed.
No-one of us would want to destroy that kind of atmosphere and we are trying our hardest to adapt the new way it is on here.

@VictorVenema
Dear V
can you explain precisely how Mast prevents clickbait and rumors from being more popular then honest toots ?
thank you

@VictorVenema Apart from its people niche and attitude (which will certainly change due to the major migration, which makes me really happy) decentralization, privacy-respect and lack of ability of bad censorship (or exploitation of freedom) is a real plus :3

@VictorVenema I joined about two years ago - then moved instance (twice) and even setup my own for a bit on masto host (as much as I was just interested in doing it!) - didn't really use any instance as I never found my community. Now I have and feel much happier - I hope the Fediverse thrives!

@VictorVenema my only complaint so far is that I'd love to be able to see posts from other servers without having to jump through hoops. But other than that I am fully on board and interested. I do understand why it's that way, but still... I can dream XD

@VictorVenema I think as soon as money comes into play things start to turn sour. Twitter is powered by marketers and algorithms trying to feed you content for their interests. The same happens with YouTube. The content creators who really put in a lot of work go under and are driven out by cheap digital influencers. Because of Mastodon's dezentral and open nature, I'm less worried here.
