How to migrate from one Mastodon server to another without losing followers:

1. Sign up on new server
2. On NEW server: Go to Account -> Moving FROM another account
3. Enter old account's handle
4. On OLD server: Go to Account -> Moving TO another account
5. Enter new account's handle and submit

@Gargron What happens if the instance of the old account dies? (AFAIK this this a redirect; what is unclear to me is this: After the redirect is set up, do followers of the old account continue to follow the old account but get redirected on every request, or is the account info updated on the follower’s instance server after the first redirect?)

@Gargron When entering the two handles, does one include the instance portion or JUST the handle?

@Gargron What if your new server doesn't show you the option to move FROM another account?

@Gargron Thanks - wondering if I need to. My search function shows “No Results” for friends I know who have signed up, even trending hashtags (a search for #art shows no results). Is that a limitation of my server or something else?

@Gargron Why can I Boost different people depending on which server I’m on? Have fewer options to boost when logged into l Glammr.us vs Mastodon.Social, plus I can only see a handful of Toots from people before being prompted to sign into their server to see more.
Is it something I can fix or is it just a feature of a federated system?
Thanks!

@Gargron I think this might be the issue that kills mastodon for me…

@Gargron Huh. I seem to only get some followers over ... unless it takes some time.

@Gargron I’m lost on step 2. If I go to my account in settings there isn’t jack about migrating.

@Gargron I think one of the biggest hurdles at the moment, is not being able to see the followers of other accounts unless we’re on the same server. It’s due to this that my mastodon experience has plateaued…and I’m not signing up and merging accounts, one account should suffice and it should be able to swap servers…
I’m stuck in mastodon.online…it’s a bit boring…

@gargron There really needs to be a trans-friendly way to change one's username. You can migrate to a different account on the same server (I tried the usual method and failed multiple times) and you can't just change your username either. That can be pretty upsetting for trans folks.

@Gargron this is a good tip for new users I guess. But it begs the question: what role does servers serve from a user perspective other than my nickname getting a fancy .@ending?

@Gargron How about if we migrate to Pleroma server? Is it the same?
