Maybe there should be foregrounded somewhere a list of general instances with open registration suitable for people who can't find a specialised instance that suits them.

But better discovery overall is a need I think across the whole fediverse.

Lack of info about the others or any good reason to choose them over the largest instance that I knew more about.

My signup preceded the recent influx a little so I wasn't thinking about load sharing either.

If there had been a music focused server with open reg and no genre focus, and mostly in english, I would have chosen that.

basically mastodon.social has the status of a default and if that's to change then something will have to actively change it.
