@dansup I do drop my phone a lot, but I've been using my Fairphone 4 without a case as well. It is a hefty device already without a case, but also very sturdy, and if something breaks I know I can get the replacement parts and repair it myself. A couple of years in, nothing has happened yet despite dropping it regularly.

@dansup to clarify, it's a pixelfed repository you can use through the f-droid app, it's not in f-droid's own repo :)

@dansup Would that be something like a pixelfed-specific SSO? Could be cool for the fediverse as a whole, but might be a massive undertaking.

@dansup not sure subdomains would be a good idea. There are plenty of possible usernames that could clash or make it very confusing or possibly even open up alleys for malicious actors, like www, media, downloads, web, app etc. It's not something I would roll out without a proper risk-assessment.

Honestly, I don't think giving FB/Meta the benefit of the doubt is ever a good idea. They have given plenty of reasons not to do so. Especially given their views on competition and their actions in that regard, I would always expect a plan from them to extinguish anything that might draw users away from their platforms.

Is still think something like this would be better

The server is part of the username. Customizing their username shouldn't be overwhelming for most people

@dansup @liaizon @pixelfed
Maybe you could have a 'Join Pixelfed' and an 'Expert Mode' button.
When you choose 'Join Pixelfed', you get to a 'Choose a username' page with an input field for your username. Right next to that an '@' and then a wheel/dropdown with a randomly sorted list of server domains that you can choose. New users would still be choosing their server, but it would be abstracted behind customizing your user name.
